Le master SDT-Geoprisme a développé depuis 2008  des stages communs de modélisation et d’analyse spatiale avec les formations de référence du domaine en France et en Europe. Initialement limitées à 3 jours, ces stages sont désormais organisés sur une période de 2 semaines, en janvier ou février et bénéficient du label européen Erasmus Intensive Program. Objectives

The Intensive Program of Master « Geographical modelling » is constructed as a common Workshop composed from different masters of Geography in Europe and which focus on the areas of theoretical and quantitative geography, spatial analysis, statistical analysis and modelling. This multidisciplinary workshop will allow the students to complete their knowledge and get familiar with different approaches. The IP will increase student and teaching staff mobility throughout Europe. It will also allow developing collaboration and diffuse the knowledge of specific domains between different specialized centers of such scientific fields.

Practical organisation

The Intensive Program of Master « Geographical modelling » is based on a 10 days workshop organized in one common place. The workshop will gather the forces of different masters of geography in Europe. The meeting of the group in one place during 10 days, will allow more exchanges between teachers, and between students, around the share of specialized spatial analysis methods that are developed in each center. Thus, it will allow develop collaborations and diffuse the knowledge of Geographical Modelling between different specialized centers of such scientific fields. It aims also to improve the quality and increase the volume of student and teaching staff mobility throughout Europe.

Content

Each of these universities, develops an option of “geographical modelling” in its own master program. In most of the cases, this program is part of a larger master program including many options in geography and spatial planning. Thus, the local options of geographical modeling are restricted to the University’s resources and concern for each university special fields of geographical modeling:

  • Transportation,
  • GIS,
  • Cartography,
  • Cities’ systems,
  • social networks,
  • spatial statistics,
  • spatial econometric,
  • fractals,
  • Epistemology,
  • Environment.

Target groups

The annual workshop planned will allow the students to complete their knowledge on geographical modeling offering a larger panel of types of researches. The extent of the fields covered by geography and especially by geographical modeling is large and therefore crosses very different fields from physics, and mathematics, to social science and planning. In this way, master students who will benefit from the IP often come from different backgrounds such as physics, computer science, sociology, history, economy or geography.

Targeted students belong to options of the masters in geography that take part in the IP:
Total maximum 30 students per year, composed approximately of:

  • Université de Luxembourg : 4
  • Université de Paris I : 4
  • Université de Paris Diderot : 5
  • Université de Rouen : 3

The students, participating in the masters of the partners, will be selected by each university according to common criteria: motivation, projects and level of competencies.

Main activities

Master workshops of 2 weeks (10 days) organized in common by all partner universities.
The program includes

  • 10 days of intensive courses,
  • Supervised individual and collective work will follow the workshop in a Moodle platform.

Evaluation

The evaluation will be proportional to the ECTS attributed in each University. At least, the evaluation includes two general exercises. According to the amount of ECTS, it could be completed by exercises to choose among the exercises proposed by the different interventions. The exercises will be realized on the Moodle platform, during and after the workshop. The Moodle platform will support a permanent supervision, as well as collaborative works between students.

General exercises 

  • An individual work: Elaboration of a conceptual map (concepts and references) with a commentary bibliography developed in one or several topics
  • A group work: On the basis of the different courses, students will be organized in teams of 2 or 3 students in charge of the elaboration of an applied research on data provided by the supervisors leading to a scientific paper. The work will include data processing, comments of results, bibliography … in order to be achieved in the form of a small scientific paper of 5-10 pages. Students will be evaluated through a combination of oral presentation (equivalent to colloquium) and written document (equivalent to paper submission). The results will be scaled from 0 to 20 (or the equivalent from 1 to 6 for Swiss students), where the maximum result (20 or 6) indicates that, according to the evaluator’s opinion, the paper could be presented at a colloquium and published in a journal.

One specific exercise to choose among the following exercises :

  1. Identification of the morphological limits of urban agglomerations using the Morpholim software. Characterizing the shape of the urban boundaries as well as the built pattern of morphological agglomerations by calculating fractal and non-fractal indexes (software used: Fractalyse, GIS software)
  2. Analysis of networks data concerning spatial processes starting from a problematic, and followed by the definition of the corpus data, the choice of scale(s), the analysis and the interpretation.
  3. Elaboration of a complex model of spatial interaction on databases describing global flows between states or cities of the world (statistical analysis realized in R language and mapping of results with GIS software).
  4. Development of a simple model dedicated to the simulation of diseases spreading with the MAGeo platform (software used: MAGeo).

The notation of the works will be done collectively (at distance) between all the teachers on the Moodle platform. For each exercise, a common evaluation grid will be built and electronic communication will allow discuss and homogenize the evaluation. A general list of admission of the module will be stressed.
